Plans for a new 13-theater complex in far east El Paso have been canceled.

According to the El Paso Times, developers failed to provide water and sewer lines to the area, delaying construction.

“Delays in (getting) infrastructure really hurt the project,” Terrell Mayton, a spokesman at Carmike’s headquarters in Columbus, Ga.,” said today. “It was going to take too long to start construction of the theater,” reported the El Paso Times.

A ground breaking ceremony was held last November, however construction never began. According to a press release, the theater would have featured 13 screens with total seating for over 2,800 guests and would have been highlighted by a state-of-theart “BIGD” auditorium, Carmike’s acclaimed premium theatre environment. It would have been an anchor tenant of a 230 acre multi-use planned development to be constructed at the northeast corner of Montana Avenue (US 62) and Loop 375.

A 14-screen Cinemark theater is currently under construction about a mile away.

Look out Hooters, there’s a new pair of, ahem, Peaks coming to the neighborhood.

Twin Peaks the restaurant that is! Yup, they’re coming to El Paso! That’s according to a construction permit request for a location at the new Fountains at Farah shopping center at Hawkins and I-10. An official announcement has not been made, however El Paso 411 has confirmed that the permit was approved May 1. A new Facebook page titled ‘Twin Peaks El Paso Fountains’ was also created in April. There is also a job posting for a restaurant manager on Craigslist.

The restaurant is known for it’s “man food” menu, which includes a large variety of meat, including Burgers, Meatloaf, Steak, Pulled Pork Nachos, Chicken Fried Steak, and Fish Tacos. The restaurant also prides itself in their selection of draft beer, which is served at 29 degrees, it’s “so cold that ice crystals form in the glass.”

According to the Twin Peaks website, all locations feature state-of-the-art TVs in a rugged mountain lodge setting with “scenic views,” which referes to the restaurants female servers.

Twin Peaks has a special connection to the El Paso area; the co-founder and CFO, Scott Gordon graduated from UTEP with a business degree, according to their website. The restaurant was founded in 2005 in Lewisville, Texas, a Dallas suburb. It has been named a “2010 Hot Concept!” by Nation’s Restaurant News and among 2011’s “Future 50” concepts by Restaurant Business magazine, the national chain has more than 25 locations throughout Arizona, Louisiana, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

No official grand opening date has been announced. Emails to Twin Peaks PR team went unreturned in time for deadline Monday evening.

El Paso. It’s all Good. — That’s the new slogan for the city’s new self-image campaign.

The message first appeared on four billboards throughout the city a month ago. For four weeks, the billboards featured the message “So Good,” which has slowly unfolded to disclose the campaign’s full message “EL PASO. IT’S ALL GOOD.” The campaign is geared towards El Pasoans and hopes to bring pride and positive light to the community. It was organized by the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau and Mithoff Burton Partners, a local marketing and advertising agency.

“We are so excited to finally share this positive new message about El Paso with the community, and really engage all El Pasoans to embrace it and get involved as Digital Ambassadors through their social networks,” said Bill Blaziek, General Manager of the El Paso Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and a leader of the Greater El Paso Strategic Communications Task Force, the group behind the campaign. “It is time for us to raise our voices in praise for our community, where great things are happening, and the future is bright. It’s all good.”

The billboards reportedly cost $14,000 and is part of a larger effort put forth by the Greater El Paso Strategic Communications Task Force, a group of leaders and representatives of civic, community, and business organizations that have come together to collectively discover and unfold a renewed image for El Paso to be shared both within the community and with the outside world. The group, under the leadership of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau, is comprised of representation from the City of El Paso, El Paso County, Fort Bliss, the Borderplex Bi-National Economic Alliance, the local chambers of commerce, the El Paso Hotel Motel Association, the Sun Bowl, UTEP, TTUHSC, the Medical Center of the Americas, the Downtown Management District, and local media partners, among others. The task force was formed in January 2011 in direct response to the continued and growing negative perceptions about El Paso as a result of the violence in Ciudad Juarez and government corruption.

“While we have been working successfully to achieve positive perceptions about El Paso to the outside world through fantastic national and regional news coverage, we knew it was absolutely vital to make sure we El Pasoans are proud of our hometown – of who we are and what we can become,” added Blaziek. “In order to be successful in achieving a positive image, we need to be our own biggest cheerleaders, and we hope to engage El Pasoans to serve as ambassadors armed with positive messages about our community both amongst ourselves and to outsiders as well.”

El Pasoans are invited to sign up to be a Digital Ambassador, a social media campaign where users can log on and share their pride in El Paso with other users. The program will also send email notifications about El Paso’s good news that they can then share on their social networks with a click of a button. To sign up, visit www.itsallgoodep.com. There will also be a “El Paso. It’s All Good.” rally in advance of the Alfresco! Fridays concert on Friday, May 10 beginning at 4 p.m. in the Arts Festival Plaza downtown. El Pasoans are invited to show support for their community, receive “El Paso. It’s All Good.” gear, and sign up for the Digital Ambassador program.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations are also encouraged to download and use “El Paso. It’s All Good.” artwork to show their support for the community at the campaign web site.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

El Pasoans Invited to Participate in Name the Team Contest for the New Triple-A Baseball Team

Today marks the start of the El Paso Triple-A Name the Team Contest. Today through May 24, fans can log-on to www.elpasotriplea.com/nametheteam to enter their ideas for the name of El Paso’s new Triple-A team.

“We have heard from so many fans since the team was announced, and the top question on everyone’s mind is ‘What will our team be called’?” said Alan Ledford, President of MountainStar Sports Group. “We are excited to launch the contest and engage the community to help name El Paso’s team. The team’s name should reflect the fun and irreverence typical of Minor League Baseball, while being truly representative of El Paso – whether it be inspired by the community’s history, unique culture, landscape, or aspirations for the future.”

The entry period will conclude at midnight on May 24, and will be followed by voting in early June, where the top-ranked names will be voted on by the public. The winning name will be announced in mid-August. The person who submits the winning name will win an exciting grand prize, to include the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day in the new El Paso Ballpark, two field-level season tickets for the 2014 season, and a personalized jersey.

Some contest ground rules: you must be 18 to enter and you can only enter a name once. Kids are encouraged to participate, and can do so with the help of a parent or guardian. Those who do not wish to enter online can also submit their name ideas by sending a standard size postcard with name, address, city, state, and zip code, day and evening phone number, and email address to MountainStar Sports Group LLC, Name the Team Contest, 4401 N. Mesa Street, El Paso, Texas, 79902.

“The public’s input in the naming of the team is very important. Again – this is El Paso’s team, so it is critical that El Pasoans have a hand in helping us find the right name,” added Ledford.

A long-time veteran to Triple-A Baseball, Ledford explained more about the Triple-A naming process: “Minor League team names are typically fun and even quirky – you hear names like the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Round Rock Express, or the Omaha Storm Chasers. Few are traditional or typical, but are fun and representative of their hometowns. That’s what El Paso’s team name needs to be – something that El Pasoans will enjoy as characteristic of their hometown.”

Fans are encouraged to visit the Minor League Baseball web site (http://www.milb.com/milb/info/teams.jsp) to see a full list of team names and learn more about the spirit and nature of Minor League team names from across the country.

The criteria for selecting a team name include name popularity based on public entries and voting, creativity, how well the name represents El Paso, and family-friendliness. While the public input is an important element of the decision-making process, MountainStar Sports Group will make the ultimate name selection based on the aforementioned criteria and Minor League Baseball approval. In the case that the final name was not submitted by the public, all those who submitted names will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize.

The final team name selected will dictate the team’s colors, mascot, and uniform, all of which will be revealed later this year after the team name is announced in mid-August.

“We are thrilled by the response we’ve had to El Paso’s Triple-A team, and know that excitement will continue to grow as the ballpark is built, the team is named, and Opening Day 2014 approaches,” said Ledford. “We know it seems like there is a long time to wait, but guests will be enjoying games with El Paso’s own Triple-A team before you know it.”

Ticket prices and packages will be announced in the coming months. Those interested in signing up for the Season Ticket Waiting List to be among the first to select their tickets can do so with a no-risk $50 per ticket deposit at www.elpasotriplea.com.
