He’s already been on the nations largest television shows, but tonight may just be one of the most important appearances of his career when El Paso artist Khalid performs at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The show dates back to 1984, where many of the worlds most notable names have performed and won their very own Moonman trophy. Khalid is also in the running for Best New Artist of 2017 – a category where artists such as Eminem, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Coldplay, Lady Gaga and Drake were once nominated at the beginning of their careers. Khalid is up against Kodak Black, Julia Michaels, Noah Cyrus, SZA and Young M.A. In a red carpet preview, Khalid and Julia Michaels were the two highest voted so far.

Even if he doesn’t win, his appearance on the show, which is MTV’s most watched event, will provide exposure to the millions of people that will watch live around the world, as well as MTV’s online audience. Although he’s performed on the national stage several times, Khalid agrees that this is an opportunity of a lifetime.

“I’m excited, I’m nervous because of the nomination,” he said in a live heart-to-heart video chat which included his mom in El Paso on Saturday evening. “[I’m nervous for] performing too. There are so many people tuned in that will be watching.”

The show begins at 6 p.m. El Paso time on MTV or MTV’s website, though a cable login is required to access. To vote visit mtv.com/vma/vote/best-new-artist
