El Paso, Texas – the birthplace of the margarita.
The drink dates back to July 4, 1942, where Francisco “Pancho” Morales mixed the very first margarita inside Tommy’s Place Bar. The story of who invented the drink had been challenged throughout the years, however, it is Morales’ claim that has been verified by industry experts.
Today, the margarita is enjoyed on menus all over the world. It’s ingredients consist of 50% tequila, 29% Cointreau, 21% fresh lime juice and of course the salt that lines the rim of the glass. Here in El Paso, many establishments have continued the delicious tradition with some interesting twists, such as the Mangarita from Andale, which comes with chunks of mango and served on fire, literally.
In honor of National Tequila Day, here are El Paso 411’s top places to get a margarita.
1. Los Bandidos De Carlos & Mickey’s
Carlos and Mickey’s is a staple in the borderland for anyone looking for an amazing margarita. If you think you’ve seen Texas sized margaritas – think again. This place owns all other local spots with their massive bowls that can practically swim in. They offer a large variety; from pomegranate with cherry, to mango, to traditional lime — all amazing.

2. Andale Mexican Restaurant & Cantina
Andale comes a close second to Carlos and Mickey’s. Their margaritas are also massive, aquarium size bowls. Don’t try to drink two of these bad boys, or you may just wake up in Juarez. A favorite is the Mangarita, which is homemade with chunks of mango – on fire, literally served on fire.

3. Julio’s Café Corona
This place originated in Juárez in the 40’s but moved to El Paso back in the 80’s, so you know they know a thing or two about margaritas. The top shelf margarita as well as the ‘rita on the rocks will, well rock your socks off.

4. L & J Cafe
Happy Hour at L&J Cafe is truly a happy place to be. This place apparently only has liquor license, which in Texas only allows you to sell beer and wine. However they’ve managed to pull off a margarita drink called the Casa Margarita. It gets them number four on this list. Go try it, you’ll love it.
