Just hours after walking off the Neon Desert stage in 2014, Wiz Khalifa found himself walking into a jail cell at the El Paso International Airport.
“They caught me with a grinder,” Khalifa said during an interview with SwaysUniverse on YouTube. “I was in jail this morning… from 6 to 2 o’clock in the afternoon.. and by 6 o’clock in the afternoon I was on stage.”
Wiz, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, took a selfie in the cell when he was allowed a phone call, which caused a stir on Twitter where the El Paso Police Department had to publicly explain why they allowed him to use his personal cell phone instead of the jail phone.
“While in custody he asked to use his phone to call a relative,” the El Paso Police Department said in a press release. “The handling officer allowed Mr. Thomaz to make that call and during that time he used that opportunity to take the pictures. To be clear, given the circumstances of this case it would not be uncommon to honor such a request.”
The case was settled in 2015 after Wiz plead guilty to a Class-C Misdemeanor and a $500 fine. He hasn’t returned to El Paso ever since.
